บ่อยครั้งที่คำบุพบทใน relative clauses และคำสรรพนาม คือ กรรมของคำบุพบทนั้น ๆ ในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษในชีวิตประจำวัน คำบุพบทมักจะถูกวางไว้ข้างหลัง relative clauses และจะใช้คำสรรพนามร่วมด้วยหรือไม่ก็ได้ ในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษแบบเป็นทางการ คำบุพบทมักจะถูกวางไว้ข้างหน้า relative clauses และจำเป็นต้องใช้คำสรรพนามร่วมด้วยเสมอ ไม่สามารถละได้ ในตัวอย่างด้านล่างต่อไปนี้ คำสรรพนามในวงเล็บสามารถละได้

The jungle (that) the tribe lived in was full of strange and unusual animals.	The jungle in which the tribe lived was full of strange and unusual animals.
