ประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสม

เป็นไปได้ที่ประโยคเงื่อนไขในแต่ละส่วนจะพูดถึงช่วงเวลาที่แตกต่างกัน ส่งผลให้เกิดประโยค "เงื่อนไขแบบผสม" โดยประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสมมี 2 แบบ ได้แก่

รูปแบบ

ในประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสมแบบนี้ 'if' clause จะใช้ past perfect tense และ main clause จะใช้ present conditional

If clause (สาเหตุ/เงื่อนไข)	Main clause (ผลที่เกิดขึ้น)
If + past perfect	present conditional
If this thing had happened	that thing would happen.

ในประโยคเงื่อนไขทุกแบบ ไม่มีการวางลำดับของประโยคที่แน่นอน หากคุณต้องการเปลี่ยนการเรียงลำดับของ if clause และ main clause คุณเพียงแค่ต้องเปลี่ยนคำสรรพนามและใส่เครื่องหมายวรรคตอนให้ถูกต้องเท่านั้น แต่ไม่ว่าจะจัดเรียงลำดับอย่างไร ความหมายของประโยคก็ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง

ประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสมจะใช้เพื่อบอกให้ทราบเกี่ยวกับเงื่อนไขที่ไม่เป็นจริงในอดีตและผลของมันอาจจะยังคงอยู่มาจนถึงปัจจุบัน บอกให้ทราบถึงสิ่งที่ตรงกันข้ามกับความเป็นจริงทั้งในอดีตและในปัจจุบัน ในประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสมนี้ เวลาใน if clause จะเป็นอดีต และเวลาใน main clause จะเป็นเวลาปัจจุบัน

If I had studied I would have my driving license. (but I didn't study and now I don't have my license)
I would be a millionaire now if I had taken that job. (but I didn't take the job and I'm not a millionaire)
If you had spent all your money, you wouldn't buy this jacket. (but you didn't spend all your money and now you can buy this jacket)

นอกจากนี้ ใน main clause ของประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสม คุณสามารถใช้ modals verb แทนการใช้ "would" ได้อีกด้วยเพื่อบอกระดับความแน่นอน การอนุญาต หรือเพื่อแนะนำให้ทราบว่าผลที่เกิดขึ้นจะเป็นอย่างไร

ในประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสมแบบนี้ 'if' clause จะใช้ simple past tense และ main clause จะใช้ perfect conditional

If I wasn't in the middle of another meeting, I would have been happy to help you.
I would have been happy to help you if I wasn't in the middle of another meeting.

ประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสมจะใช้เพื่อบอกให้ทราบเกี่ยวกับสถานการณ์ที่ไม่เป็นจริงในปัจจุบันและผลที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นได้ในอดีต (แต่ไม่เป็นความจริง) ในประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบผสมนี้ เวลาใน if clause จะเวลาปัจจุบันหรือตลอดเวลา และเวลาใน main clause จะเป็นเวลาอดีตก่อนหน้านี้ ตัวอย่างเช่น "If I wasn't afraid of spiders" ซึ่งตรงกันข้ามกับความจริงในปัจจุบัน เพราะในความเป็นจริงแล้วตอนนี้ฉันกลัวแมงมุม "I would have picked it up" ซึ่งตรงกันข้ามกับความเป็นจริงในอดีต เพราะฉันไม่ได้จับแมงมุมตัวนั้นขึ้นมา
