คำกริยาวิเศษณ์นำในประโยคคำถาม ได้แก่ why, where, how และ when จะถูกวางไว้ต้นประโยคคำถาม ซึ่งสามารถตอบคำถามนี้ในแบบเป็นประโยคหรือบุพบทวลีก็ได้ เมื่อใช้คำวิเศษณ์ประเภทนี้ขึ้นต้นประโยคคำถามแล้วต้องสลับประธานและกริยา โดยให้กริยาขึ้นก่อน
