Continuous infinitive ถูกใช้เพื่ออธิบายกริยาที่ทำอย่างต่อเนื่อง หลังกริยาหรือกริยาช่วยต้องเป็น infinitive รูปของ continuous infinitive คือ
to be +v-ing (present participle)
และเหมือนกับ present infinitive มีบางกรณีที่ infinitive แบบไม่ใช้ to จำเป็นต้องอยู่ในรูป perfect continuous infinitive ดังนั้น ส่งผลให้ to ถูกละออกไป ซึ่งมักจะเกิดขึ้นเมื่อใช้ร่วมกับคำกริยาช่วย modal ส่วนใหญ่
ตัวอย่างเช่น
- I'd really like to be swimming in a nice cool pool right now.
- I happened to be waiting for the bus when the accident happened.
- It must be nice to be going to a wedding overseas.
- You must be joking!
- We should be hurrying. We're late!
- You'd better be working on your report when I get there.
