ในประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบที่ 2 'if' clause จะใช้ simple past tense และ main clause จะใช้ present conditional หรือ present continuous conditional

ในประโยคเงื่อนไขทุกแบบ ไม่มีการวางลำดับของประโยคที่แน่นอน หากคุณต้องการเปลี่ยนการเรียงลำดับของ if clause และ main clause คุณเพียงแค่ต้องเปลี่ยนคำสรรพนามและใส่เครื่องหมายวรรคตอนให้ถูกต้องเท่านั้น แต่ไม่ว่าจะจัดเรียงลำดับอย่างไร ความหมายของประโยคก็ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง

If it rained, you would get wet.
You would get wet if it rained.

ประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบที่ 2 ใช้เพื่อพูดถึงเงื่อนไขที่สมมุติขึ้นมาและผลที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นได้ ประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบนี้ไม่ได้ตั้งอยู่บนพื้นฐานความจริง โดยประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบที่ 2 จะใช้เพื่อบอกเวลา ณ. ปัจจุบันหรือเมื่อใดก็ได้ และสิ่งนั้นเป็นสถานการณ์สมมุติ

นอกจากนี้ ใน main clause ของประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบที่ 2 คุณสามารถใช้ modals verb แทนการใช้ "would" ได้อีกด้วยเพื่อบอกระดับความแน่นอน การอนุญาต หรือเพื่อแนะนำให้ทราบว่าผลที่เกิดขึ้นจะเป็นอย่างไร

would + กริยาช่อง 1 ที่ไม่ต้องใช้ร่วมกับ "to"
